snowman with top hat

My brother sent me a text a few weeks ago asking if I could “crochet a snowman in a basket. 10 inches tall.” my first response was “in a basket?!” thinking it might some strange auto-correct, but no, he wanted a snowman in a basket. It turns out he has a Christmas decoration which is a hot air balloon with a snowman in the basket underneath. somehow the snowman part has broken so he wanted a replacement. ok, fine. Next “10 inches is pretty huge – how big is the balloon?”. He said the size of a small lampshade. 10 inches is definitely going to be too big. This one is a smidge over 5 inches tall (~13cm).

Apart from the main snowman body everything is optional so make the bits you like (probably not many of you have a need for the basket…) gauge isn’t important as you’ll just end up with a smaller or larger snowman. I used a 4mm hook and dk yarn for a 5 inch snowman. Crochet into the back loop only of every stitch unless the instructions say otherwise. crochet terms are American but only sc is used for most of the parts (some hdc for the basket).

SNOWMAN

We’re starting at the top of the head and working all the way down in one piece. With white yarn create a magic ring of 6 sc.

round 1. 2sc in each stitch (12 stitches)

round 2. *2sc, 1sc* repeat 6 times (18 stitches)

round 3. *2sc, 1sc, 1sc* repeat 6 times (24 stitches)

round 4. *2sc, 1sc, 1sc, 1sc* repeat 6 times (30 stitches)

round 5 & 6. 1sc in each stitch (30 stitches)   (widest part of head)

round 7. *skip 1 stitch, 1sc, 1sc, 1sc, 1sc* repeat 6 times (24 stitches)

round 8. *skip 1 stitch, 1sc, 1sc, 1sc* repeat 6 times (18 stitches)

round 9 & 10. 1sc in each stitch (18)    (neck)

STUFF HEAD and continue

round 11. *2sc, 1sc, 1sc* repeat 6 times (24 stitches)

round 12. *2sc, 1sc, 1sc, 1sc* repeat 6 times (30 stitches)

round 13. *2sc, 1sc, 1sc, 1sc, 1sc* repeat 6 times (36 stitches)

round 14 – 21. 1sc in each stitch (36)    (widest part of body)

round 22. *skip 1 stitch, 1sc, 1sc, 1sc, 1sc, 1sc* repeat 6 times (30 stitches)

round 23. *skip 1 stitch, 1sc, 1sc, 1sc, 1sc* repeat 6 times (24 stitches)

round 24. *skip 1 stitch, 1sc, 1sc, 1sc* repeat 6 times (18 stitches)

STUFF BODY and continue

round 25. *skip 1 stitch, 1sc, 1sc* repeat 6 times (12 stitches)

round 26. *skip 1 stitch, 1sc* repeat 6 times (6 stitches)

add more stuffing if needed, slip stitch in the 3rd stitch from the hook and fasten off

HAT

We’re starting at the top of the hat and working down to the brim in one piece. With black yarn create a magic ring of 6 sc.

round 1. 2sc in each stitch (12 stitches)

round 2. 1sc in each stitch – go through both loops for this round only (12 stitches)

1 sc each stitch until the hat is as tall as you would like (back loop only again now). I completed around 6 or 7 rounds.

next round. 2sc in each stitch (24 stitches)    (brim)

next round. *2sc, 1sc, 1sc* repeat 8 times (32 stitches)

fasten off and sew onto head. I chose not to stuff the hat so that I could squash and pull it into the shape I wanted.

SCARF

row 1. In any colour you want chain 36

row 2. sc in 2nd chain from hook and each chain across (35 stitches)

row 3. chain 1, turn, sc each stitch across (35 stitches)

Fasten off and secure around the neck with a stitch. If you just sew through the scarf and not the snowman then you will be able to put it on and take it off by stretching over the snowman’s head.

BASKET

With brown yarn create a magic ring of 6 sc.

round 1. 2sc in each stitch (12 stitches)

round 2. *2sc, 1sc* repeat 6 times (18 stitches)

round 3. *2sc, 1sc, 1sc* repeat 6 times (24 stitches)

round 4. *2sc, 1sc, 1sc, 1sc* repeat 6 times (30 stitches)

round 5. 1sc in each stitch (30 stitches)

round 6. *2sc, 1sc, 1sc, 1sc, 1sc* repeat 6 times (36 stitches)

round 7 & 8. 1hdc in each stitch (36 stitches)

round 9. *chain 4, skip 1 hdc, sl st next 8 hdc* repeat 4 times. (this creates 4 loops for attaching the string of the hot air balloon…)

fasten off and weave in ends.

FINISHING

because this is an ornament and not a toy I didn’t have to make it child chewable friendly so I used glue to stick on felt for the eyes, nose and a flower on the hat. I then stuck a single piece of wire through the body and twisted the ends to make stick arms. You could use buttons, beads or embroidery and leave out the arms if it’s going to be a toy.

This is a free pattern & you can sell any items you make from it – I wish you huge success. It is not required but you would make me very happy if you included a link to this pattern in any blog posts / item listings / etc. Writing and testing a crochet pattern is hard work and I retain copyright of the images and the written pattern so please do not copy or distribute any part of this pattern and do not use these images in your listings – use only images of the actual items you create. Thank you and happy crocheting.
